Iranian Ballast Water Treatment Equipment Installed on National Iranian Tanker Company Fleet

The Managing Director of the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) announced the successful installation of ballast water treatment equipment manufactured by an Iranian knowledge-based company on one of the company’s giant oil tankers.

According to Fars News Agency, citing the Public Relations Department of the National Iranian Tanker Company, Hossein Shiva announced this news and stated: In line with the Leader’s emphasis on supporting knowledge-based companies, after several years of support from the Technical and Fleet Operations Management of the National Iranian Tanker Company for this domestic knowledge-based company, we are now witnessing the results of these efforts.

Referring to the strategic importance of the National Iranian Tanker Company fleet in securing national interests and maintaining the flow of oil and petroleum product exports, he stated: Despite the operational complexities and sensitivities of the fleet, this giant oil tanker is the first Iranian-flagged vessel to have a domestically manufactured ballast water treatment system installed.

The Managing Director of the National Iranian Tanker Company stated: The Ballast Water Management Convention, aimed at preventing the transfer of invasive aquatic species through ships, entered into force on September 8, 2017. As Iran is a member of this convention, the country’s owned fleet is required to install ballast water treatment systems.

Shiva added: With the assistance and supervision of the Technical and Fleet Operations Management of the National Iranian Tanker Company, the knowledge-based company that manufactured this equipment had previously succeeded in obtaining Basic Approval and Final Approval from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
